For this assignment, I decided to create my sprite plane of Rock Lee from Naruto. Here are some screenshots of my workflow and final renders
I grabbed an image online and was able to reduce the image to a 72x72 image to use for my voxel model in Maya.
In Maya, I created a cube and subdivided it to make as smooth as I can. Then I UVd the cube and placed all the UV shells in the bounding pixel space that I wanted each block to have to represent each pixel in the image.
After taking the model to Unreal, I decided to give the voxel sprite a "powerup" effect so I created a flipbook texture consisting of 16 frames of the effect and imported it to Unreal Engine.
In Unreal Engine, I created an instance material to control the speed of the flipbook and the color and emissive values of the effect.
Final Render in Unreal.
Render with effect.
